A few days later, Becky was standing in Monica’s bedroom. She immediately noticed that the door into the room was partially blocked by boxes, and that the room itself was crowded with furniture and even more boxes.

Monica caught her look and hurriedly explained: “Everything I own is in this room, but it’s just temporary. I can hardly wait to move so that I’m not so crowded into one small space.”

Becky could sympathize. “I know how challenging it must be to whittle your possessions down to the few that will comfortably fit into one room. But a cluttered area such as this one can hold ‘temporary’ in place for so long that it’ll start to feel permanent. If you want to move your life forward, you’re going to have to make room to do so right here in your bedroom. Right now, your extra stuff is keeping you stuck in this place. I highly recommend that you sort through it, and put what doesn’t fit in here in storage.” Becky paused. “But before you go out and spend money on a storage space, make sure that everything here is even worth keeping.”

Becky went on to explain the importance of reviewing possessions from time to time, just to make sure they’re still useful.

“As we change, our needs and tastes change. Things wear out or simply lose their charm. When they do, it’s important to let them go.”
